SEGREGATION OF INVESTIGATORS

In the world today, there are a lot of cases of criminal activities that are taking place. This means that the law enforcement departments which basically comprises of the police have to step up its tactics of dealing with these evolving criminal activities. Depending on the area and the level of criminal activities that are taking place, there is a need for a police department to employ different tactics that would help it in dealing with the criminal activities. (Fisher, 2004)

Among the main methods that can be used in dealing with the criminal activities is the segregation of investigators who are in one particular police department. Segregation means setting aside some police officers so that they can act as investigators into some criminal issues that are taking place in the area.
When investigators are segregated, it means that they will channel all their energy into the assigned activities. For instance, if the officers are segregated to deal with a criminal activity such as homicide, such officers are likely to put their full strength and knowledge to dealing with these criminal activities. They are likely to give their best in dealing with the criminal activity and in the process, come out with the best results that can be attained. They are likely to come up with the best results because their attention will not be divided among other activity. (Sonne, 2006)

This is not the case when the officers are working as a whole organization in all the criminal activities. They may not be able to deal with some issues because their attention is divided. The reason is that there are some criminal activities that happen to be emergency cases and needs to be attended to immediately. This means that when such activities or such issues arise, the officers will leave all the other activities that were taking place and first attend to these urgent matters. This is not the case when officers are not segregated because they have specific duties that they are supposed to attend to. This means that because they are segregated and only a small percentage of the officers are assigned to that specific task, when there is an emergency, other officer which are have no specific duties assigned to them will be given the mandate to deal with emergency which has occurred. This means that incase there is an emergency, the segregated officers will still move on with their investigation and therefore, they can be said to be very efficient in their activities. This is the main different between segregating investigators and letting them work as a whole department. The segregated officers are more efficient than the officers who are working as a whole organization. (Becker, 2004)

It is therefore necessary to segregate officer in case needs to be more efficient in dealing with criminal activities. Some of these criminal activities are very serious that they will need segregating investigators because they are a serious threat to human life. Other criminal activities such homicide are serious violations of human life and therefore they need to be deal with seriously. This means that when dealing with these issues, the attention should not be divided. (Sonne, 2006)

It can therefore be said that there exists a difference between segregating investigators for some criminal activities and letting them work as the entire department.  The difference is realized in terms of the performance and the efficiency under which these officers execute their duties. Segregated investigators are more likely to be more efficient than when they are working as a department as a whole. (Becker, 2004)
